The cervical spine in the neck is made up of seven bones called vertebrae which are separated by discs filled with a cushiony, gel like substance. The cervical disc stabilizes the neck and allows it to turn from side to side and bend forward and backwards. The discs allow your neck to move, acting as shock absorbers. Disc injuries can cause neck pain and a stiff neck. A disc injury can press on one or more of the nerves that run through the spinal cord and cause pain, numbness or weakness radiating into the shoulder, arm and hand. Cervical and disc injuries can be caused by aging or by traumatic events, such as an automobile wreck, motorcycle wreck, truck wreck or a fall.
If you are involved in any kind of personal injury and you have these symptoms you should immediately seek emergency medical treatment. Untreated injuries can develop quickly into more serious problems.
