The knee is a complex joint. Common injuries include fractures, dislocation, sprains and ligament tears. The knee is the largest joint in the body and one of the most easily injured. The knee joint consists of bones, cartilage, ligaments and tendons. Fractures can include a fracture of the kneecap which is called the patella. The femur and tibia, which are the long bones in the leg, can also be fractured at the joint. Knee fractures are commonly caused by high impact trauma such as a fall or a motor vehicle wreck. Injuries can also occur as a result of dislocation. Dislocation can also be caused by high impact traumas. Ligaments are an important part of the knee joint. The ligaments in the knee are frequently injured. Certain ligament injuries are common in sport activities. Ligaments can also be injured as a result of car wrecks, truck wrecks , motorcycle wrecks or other types of high impact collisions. There are two (2) ligaments in the knee. The ACL is the Anterior Cruciate Ligament and the PCL is the Posterior Cruciate Ligament. There are medial collateral ligaments and lateral collateral ligaments. Those are the ligaments on the sides of the knee. The meniscus is the cushion between the bones of the knee. Tears in the meniscus can occur during sports or as the result of a twisting or pivoting action. Tendons can also be torn. If you are involved in any type of trauma and have severe pain or loss of range of motion or swelling of the knee you need to seek medical attention.
